Monthly News Highlights   > Fifth MBC President Samuel R. Spencer Expanded Campus, Reputation Sam Spencer served Mary Baldwin College with creativity and vigor for more than 50 years, beginning in 1957 with his tenure as Mary Baldwin’s fifth president. He was selected for the position at age 38 and guided the college into a legendary era of physical growth and intellectual development. Spencer passed away October 16 at age 94.   Ever Improving The first phase of renovations in Pearce — completed in winter 2011 — relocated faculty offices adjacent to labs on the first floor and made possible equipment updates and other enhancements that benefit students in and out of the classroom. A positive response from students, faculty, and community members inspires even greater eagerness to finish this core component of   Ever Ahead: The Campaign for Mary Baldwin College. Gen. N. Michael Bissell passed on leadership of the nation’s only all-women Corps of Cadets to new commandant Brig. Gen.
