  Samuel Spencer > Fifth MBC President Samuel R. Spencer Expanded Campus, Reputation
Sam Spencer served Mary Baldwin College with creativity and vigor for more than 50 years, beginning in 1957 with his tenure as Mary Baldwin’s fifth president. He was selected for the position at age 38 and guided the college into a legendary era of physical growth and intellectual development. Spencer passed away October 16 at age 94.

Ever Improving

The first phase of renovations in Pearce — completed in winter 2011 — relocated faculty offices adjacent to labs on the first floor and made possible equipment updates and other enhancements that benefit students in and out of the classroom. A positive response from students, faculty, and community members inspires even greater eagerness to finish this core component of   Ever Ahead: The Campaign for Mary Baldwin College.

Gala, Jonagold, and Golden Delicious were among the varieties of apples gleaned by Mary Baldwin College students, faculty, staff, and friends on October 1, kicking off a day of revelry that echoed Apple Day festivities from more than 70 years ago.
 
  Change of Command > VWIL Change of Command Marks New Phase for Program
Nearly 20 years after he began his association with the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership, Brig. Gen. N. Michael Bissell passed on leadership of the nation’s only all-women Corps of Cadets to new commandant Brig. Gen. Teresa Djuric during his final Change of Command ceremony October 17.

“My parents and the atmosphere at home had a large influence on my desire to learn about and report on what was going on in the world,” said MBC’s Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Scholar Triveni Mathur, in residence at MBC for the fall semester.

Under the guidance of Political Science Professor Laura van Assendelft, MBC students presented live coverage of the Virginia gubernatorial election to the campus community on November 5.
