'Topping Out' Celebrates Construction Progress
Mary Baldwin College trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff gathered on the ever-evolving construction site of the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences in Fishersville in mid-July to celebrate the placement of the last piece of steel in the structure that will house MBC’s newest graduate programs. The construction crew, along with architects, and MBC board members and staff signed a beam that was hoisted by crane to complete the framing of the entrance to the building. Kjellstrom + Lee Construction officials led a tour of the emerging structure that overlooks Interstate 64. According to Fulton Sensabaugh, partner at the construction firm, crews will start “closing up the building” in the next several weeks. Jerusalem stone — which will adorn both the interior and exterior of the building — has recently reached port and will soon be on site. Despite a fairly rainy spring and summer, officials say work on the building is on schedule. Murphy Deming plans to open its doors to physical therapy and occupational therapy doctoral students in June 2014.
Fall Open House Planned for September
Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences will hold its second open house for prospective students from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, September 14 at the Augusta Health Community Care Building in Fishersville. The event — the second such occasion since April — will provide an opportunity for prospective students and the community to learn more about Mary Baldwin College's developing graduate programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant studies. Registration is required.
Accreditation Update
The developing Doctor of Physical Therapy program submitted the Application for Candidacy for the accreditation process with the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) on June 1. The second phase of this rigorous process took place on July 25–26 when a CAPTE reviewer came on site to verify the application information. The next step will be a review of the Application for Candidacy and report of the reviewer by the Commission in November. A positive outcome at this stage is anticipated and will permit the program to begin admission of the charter class for summer 2014.
The occupational therapy program is positioned to submit their application for “Developing Program Status” on September 16. This is the first stage of the accreditation process through the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). This document will be reviewed by the ACOTE and a decision made in December regarding the application. Once approval is received from the Council students will be admitted to the charter class of the OT program starting in June.
The application cycle is now open for both programs.
All programs have initiated the appropriate professional accreditation process.
Our application to offer doctoral level programs has been approved by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

Mary Baldwin College is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. The program has submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional/technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-306-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

Mary Baldwin College has applied for Accreditation – Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Mary Baldwin College/Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences anticipates matriculating its first class in August 2015, pending Accreditation – Provisional in March 2015. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status for a new PA program that has not yet enrolled students, but at the time of its initial accreditation review, has demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
