Applications Rolling in for OT and PT Programs
The admissions cycle for occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) programs opened in July, and the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences (MDCHS) Admissions Office is receiving applications daily. Some prospective students have had the opportunity to meet directors and faculty from the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at graduate school fairs, open houses, and information sessions.
“This is an exciting time for our new college,’ said MDCHS Director of Enrollment and Student Services Martha Modlin. “We are looking forward to interviewing many talented candidates; some of them are coming from as far away as California to meet with our faculty.’
The application deadline for students interested in PT is December 1, 2013. OT applicants need to submit materials by January 15, 2014.
Community Partnerships Strengthen Programs
Consistent with the mission of Mary Baldwin College, the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences (MDCHS) is committed to addressing the growing need for health care in the Shenandoah Valley while educating future clinicians. Through the Augusta Community Forum and the Mary Baldwin College service learning network, MDCHS faculty and staff have connected with key community partners to develop ongoing projects that will be mutually beneficial.
Former Fieldwork Educator Named OT Director of Clinical Education
Allison Ellington brings several years of clinical experience — primarily in adult neurological rehabilitation — to the Murphy Deming team as director of clinical education for the occupational therapy program. She earned a master of science in occupational therapy from Ithaca College, and she holds advanced clinical certification in Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation and certification through the American Occupational Therapy Organization as a fieldwork educator. While working at the University of Virginia HealthSouth, Ellington served as fieldwork educator and assisted the occupational therapy fieldwork coordinator in scheduling and policy development.
All programs have initiated the appropriate professional accreditation process.
Our application to offer doctoral level programs has been approved by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

Mary Baldwin College is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. The program has submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional/technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-306-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

Mary Baldwin College has applied for Accreditation – Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Mary Baldwin College/Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences anticipates matriculating its first class in August 2015, pending Accreditation – Provisional in March 2015. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status for a new PA program that has not yet enrolled students, but at the time of its initial accreditation review, has demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
