Laying the Groundwork for Student Success
Medical Facilities of America Vice President of Rehabilitation Todd Putney and Vice President of Human Resources Ron Selzler met with key Murphy Deming personnel on MBC's main campus in Staunton to present President Pamela Fox a gift and to discuss the development of an affiliation agreement. Such agreements with outside providers will give Murphy Deming students much-needed experience working with patients in the clinical setting.
"MFA is investing in the future," said Linda Seestedt-Stanford, MBC vice president of health sciences. "They have outstanding facilities and clinical personnel. We thank them for their support in providing us with these clinical rotations. Their affiliation with the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences will help assure that future PTs and OTs receive optimal educational experiences."
Murphy Deming Expands Faculty
As construction accelerates on Mary Baldwin's satellite campus in Fishersville, the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences faculty also continues to grow. The latest hire is clinical anatomist Keith Bishop, who brings a wealth of clinical experience in the areas of anatomy, neuroanatomy, pathophysiology, and cellular science to the emerging physical therapy program.
Prior to joining the Murphy Deming team, Bishop served as an active duty Air Force officer for 21 years. After earning a master of science in athletic training from Brigham Young University and a certificate of physical therapy from Cleveland State University, he performed various clinical roles for the Air Force throughout the world, including at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Open House Scheduled for April 20

Meet program personnel, ask questions about the admissions process, and find out more about the new state-of-the-art facility under construction in Augusta County's health care corridor. Herz Highlighted as 'Career Visionary'
Murphy Deming's own Ben Herz was singled out in his profession as a "Career Visionary" in the national publication Today in OT. The OT program director is noted for his work using the Nintendo Wii gaming system with Parkinson's patients.
All programs have initiated the appropriate professional accreditation process.
Our application to offer doctoral level programs has been approved by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Mary Baldwin College is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The program will submit an Application for Candidacy on June 1, 2013, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional/technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.
Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by CAPTE, 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-306-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

Mary Baldwin College has applied for Accreditation – Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Mary Baldwin College/Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences anticipates matriculating its first class in August 2015, pending Accreditation – Provisional in March 2015. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status for a new PA program that has not yet enrolled students, but at the time of its initial accreditation review, has demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
