Senator Tim Kaine spent some time at Mary Baldwin College Friday helping to dedicate its new campus in Fishersville, nearly a year after its doors opened. Kaine was among the many speakers Friday inside the new Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences.

The ribbon snapped, the standing-room crowd cheered, and an important chess piece in Augusta County’s Life Sciences Corridor was formally dedicated to Bertie Murphy Deming Smith, whose $15 million gift brought the project to life.

Community Gathers to Celebrate New Programs, Campus
It was just three years ago that Mary Baldwin College President Pamela Fox stood with Bertie Murphy Deming Smith ’46 on a snow-covered hill in Fishersville, looked at the view below toward the hospital and health care clinics and beyond toward mountains, and imagined a time — in the not-so-distant future — when the institution would become an integral part of the community’s health care landscape.
Since that moment, Smith’s generous lead gift of $15 million has brought to the college several moments of celebration: an announcement in 2012 that MBC would launch the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, a groundbreaking ceremony, and opening the doors of the college in 2014. Those moments culminated in a formal dedication ceremony on April 17 — to mark the college’s first year, marvel at a beautiful and state-of-the-art flagship building, recognize critical support from donors and community partners, and celebrate an exciting new chapter in the history of Mary Baldwin College.
Course in Haiti Taking Shape
Slated for summer 2016, Perspectives in Global Health Care will encourage PT and OT students — and those in the physician assistant program in coming years — to analyze a health care system in another part of the world and share ideas about how rehabilitative services are both taught and carried out in clinical settings.
Partnerships Improve Connectivity within Health Corridor
Since the completion of the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences building in June 2014, several other major construction projects in Fishersville have helped improve connectivity along the local medical corridor — and the opportunities for Mary Baldwin health sciences students.
OT Students Bring Awareness, Compassion with Children’s Book
It was an easy choice for the students to make — they would choose to make a children’s book. What they didn’t expect was that the book they created would be passed on to a publisher and open up a new possibility for reaching patients.
Community Service Spotlight: Go Girls!
A group of MDCHS physical therapy students led a group of youngsters in exercise April 7 during the Waynesboro YMCA Go Girls! program, sponsored by Augusta Health and the UVa Children’s Hospital. The weekly gathering includes group discussion about health and wellness topics.
All programs have initiated the appropriate professional accreditation process.

Effective November 6, 2013, Mary Baldwin College has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314; phone: 703-706-3245; email: accreditation@apta.org). Candidacy is not an accreditation status nor does it assure eventual accreditation. Candidate for Accreditation is a pre-accreditation status of affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates the program is progressing toward accreditation.

Mary Baldwin College has applied for Accreditation – Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Mary Baldwin College/Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences anticipates matriculating its first class in January 2016, pending achieving Accreditation – Provisional status at the September 2015 ARC-PA meeting. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding accreditation-provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation and has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA and its Web address is www.acoteonline.org. Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
