The Steel is Rising

The Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences’ new facility is becoming a reality. Situated on a 30-acre site adjacent to Augusta Health and viewable from Interstate 64, this structure is rapidly rising to form a three-story, 54,000-square-foot facility. As the building takes form it is generating excitement and questions from the general community. On schedule, the building will be ready to welcome students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Occupational Therapy programs June 2014. This building was designed to support inter-professional collaboration and is the flagship building on the new Mary Baldwin College satellite campus.

New School, New Logo

It was clear to the faculty and staff of the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences that any logo designed for their nascent college and its programs had to convey a sense of positive movement, symbolism that expressed an integration of mind, body and spirit and an interlocking effect, illustrative of inter-professional linkages.

The Office of Communication, Marketing, and Public Affairs at Mary Baldwin College listened patiently then created a number of prototype logos for Murphy Deming. The selected logo is comprised of three “arms” that represent mind, body and spirit and how important each of them is in the healing and rehabilitation process. The interlinking of the “arms” is symbolic of the three initial programs at Murphy Deming (occupational therapy, physical therapy and physician assistant studies) and the inter-professional nature of their curricula. The logo conveys a very definite forward movement, an obvious energy, consistent with Murphy Deming’s drive for quality in faculty, program offerings, and students.

Murphy Deming Names PA Director

David Paulk comes well equipped to lead the new Physician Assistant Program. In addition to his many years as a practicing clinician he has served as clinical coordinator in the Rutgers University/University of Medicine and Dentistry PA Program, academic coordinator in the Arcadia University PA Program, and as the founding director of Ohio Dominican University’s PA Program.

“We are so very lucky to have David as a part of our team," said Linda Seestedt-Stanford, vice president of health sciences. "He is passionate about PA education and brings a high level of enthusiasm and many innovative ideas that complement the inter-professional health care focus we are trying to achieve in our new college."

Accreditation Update

Murphy Deming's doctor of physical therapy program submitted its application for candidacy with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy, or CAPTE, on June 1. The application has been verified and an on-site visit is scheduled for next month. Once the application is heard before CAPTE in November, Murphy Deming anticipates receiving notification of candidacy status by December, which puts the college on track to admit the charter DPT class in June 2014.

Mary Baldwin College is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from CAPTE. The program has submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional/technical phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional/technical courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation.

Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-306-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

Mary Baldwin College has applied for Accreditation – Provisional from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Mary Baldwin College/Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences anticipates matriculating its first class in August 2015, pending Accreditation – Provisional in March 2015. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status for a new PA program that has not yet enrolled students, but at the time of its initial accreditation review, has demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA.

Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
