Associate Vice President of Student Engagement

Mary Baldwin University (MBU) seeks a dynamic and seasoned Associate Vice President of Student Engagement to join the Division of Student Engagement’s leadership. Reporting to the inaugural Vice President of Student Engagement, the associate vice president of student engagement will be an accomplished professional committed to the University’s focus on providing an educational environment that empowers leaders to pursue lives of purpose in a changing world.

Located in Staunton, Virginia, Mary Baldwin recently grew from college to university status reflecting its growing range of bachelor’s, master level, and doctoral programs. MBU is a very diverse entrepreneurial institution with a record of innovation aspiring to meet the evolving higher education needs of society. The associate vice president for student engagement will play an instrumental role in ensuring that MBU continues its development as a small university responsive to changes in society and the role of higher education within that society.

With responsibility for the residential student population, the associate vice president of student engagement will serve as a member of the Division of Student Engagement’s senior leadership team supporting divisional efforts towards the achievement of the university strategic plan. They will bring deep knowledge of best practices in student affairs, creative and innovative thinking, and an appreciation for the essential link between diversity and excellence. The successful candidate will have significant leadership experience in student life and a particular interest in and commitment to working in partnership with faculty, students and staff colleagues. The associate vice president will have served in progressively more demanding supervisory and administrative positions and will understand the culture of a university that is undergoing transformation. The associate vice president will demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between academic and co-curricular engagement; have strong academic values and a willingness to consider new possibilities; and possess the diplomacy and leadership skills to work effectively with a team.

The associate vice president will oversee the daily operation of the Office of Student Engagement and supervise the offices of Community Standards & Title IX, Student Activities, and First Year Experience. They will also co-lead the efforts of the Student Support Team, coordinate the on-call system, manage the university medical and personal leave processes, and support students in crisis. The associate vice president will also represent the vice president of student engagement when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve in an administrative capacity to support the divisional vision and mission, management of special projects, committees, and programs.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders on university policies/procedures, protocols, behavioral and crisis management.
  • Coordinate the professional on call rotation.
  • Serve as Co-Chair of the Student Support Team.
  • Assisting in the management of the division budget and implementation of assessment plans.
  • Assist students with various identified needs to support student success and retention.
  • Performs other duties assigned.


A Master’s degree in a field related to work in Student Personnel, Higher Education, or Counseling and a minimum of 7 years of professional experience with extensive supervisory experience is required. An earned doctorate and 10 years of experience is preferred; however, candidates with a depth of experience in the field and appropriate professional credentials will be given full consideration.
