Located in Staunton, Virginia, Mary Baldwin University (MBU) recently grew from college to university status reflecting its growing range of bachelor’s, master level, and doctoral programs. MBU is a very diverse entrepreneurial institution with a record of innovation aspiring to meet the evolving higher education needs of society. The director of residence life and housing will play an instrumental role in ensuring that MBU continues its development as a small university responsive to changes in society and the role of higher education within that society.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement, the Director of Residence Life and Housing provides vision and leadership for all services and the programmatic direction of the Office of Residence Life. The Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the University’s residential system, which encompasses 10 residence halls and a number of University owned houses. The Director is responsible for advancing a student-focused, learning-based, residential educational program/curriculum that emphasizes personal growth and development. The Director also provides leadership for assignments and occupancy management, policy development, facilities management, residence life, educational programming, and assessment. As a key member of the Student Engagement Management Team, the Director will participate in on-call duties and will collaborate with many campus partners including immediate colleagues in the division, as well as colleagues in leadership and staff positions across Dining Services, Campus Safety & Security, Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration, and Facilities Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the housing application and room assignment process
  • Manage maintenance requests for all residence facilities
  • Manage student housing records using the Jenzabar Student Life Module
  • Responsible for the coordination and execution of the room safety inspection process
  • Serve as a member of the Student Support Team
  • Facilitate crisis management within the residence halls
  • Oversee programmatic efforts of campus living and learning communities
  • Responsible for the management of a department that consists of, three Graduate Student Area Coordinators, and twenty-three Resident Advisors
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, onboarding and training of professional, paraprofessional, and student staff members
  • Develop and teach the Residential Leadership curriculum for May term
  • Oversee the development of orientation and in-service training for all residence life staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in an applicable field and a minimum of three to five years of experience in housing, residence life, student affairs or related experience.
  • Experience with supervision of student staff is required. Previous experience supervising professional staff is strongly preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be committed to providing the highest level of customer service and responsiveness.
  • Ability to make decisions independently, exhibit outstanding organizational skills, and excellent judgment as well as a high level of self-motivation and accountability.
  • Commitment to working with and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working with Jenzabar (or similar system) and Maxient Technologies (or similar system) software strongly preferred.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends will be required
