About Mary Baldwin

Founded in 1842 as Augusta Female Seminary, Mary Baldwin is a distinctive small university offering a variety of coeducational master’s and doctoral programs while remaining one of the nation’s oldest women’s colleges. At the undergraduate level, the College for Women serves students on the college’s historic campus in downtown Staunton, Virginia, and the Baldwin Online and Adult Programs serves both men and women on campus and at regional centers throughout Virginia. Graduate programs include health sciences, offered in a state-of the-art facility on our Fishersville campus; as well as education and Shakespeare studies available on campus and online.

In August 2016, Mary Baldwin will change its name to Mary Baldwin University to reflect its growing range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, and kick off a year-long celebration of its 175th anniversary.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Mary Baldwin is located in Staunton, a lively small city known for its historic downtown and active arts community that is ranked among the top ten best small cities in America according to Smithsonian Magazine.  Mary Baldwin shares its home and educational excellence with other dynamic elements in the arts and education that include the Heifetz International Music Institute – which is dedicated to the artistic growth of the most promising young musicians in the world and also with The American Shakespeare Center which hosts an internationally acclaimed theatre company that performs works in the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre – The Blackfriars Playhouse.
