Position Title: Library Student Assistant

Supervisor: Christina Harris, Outreach and Instruction Librarian

Office: Martha S. Grafton Library

SUMMARY

Library Student Assistants assist with the daily operations of Grafton Library to include providing customer service to library patrons, participating in collection maintenance, helping to keep the library welcoming, and other duties as assigned.

HOURS

Library Student Assistants are expected to work approximately 5–8 hours a week each semester. Hours assigned are based on the needs of the library, around the student’s class and activity schedule, and in accordance with contracts determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The library is typically staffed the following hours, though holidays and breaks may alter the schedule:  Monday–Thursday from 8:00 AM–Midnight, Friday from 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, Saturday from Noon–6:00 PM, and Sunday from Noon—Midnight. Each student must also work 6–8 hours during rotating weekends throughout the school year. Library Student Assistants are required to work a minimum number of shifts during exam weeks. Those students who are on campus during May Term are also required to work additional shifts, including one additional weekend shift during that time period.

RESPONSIBILITIES / EXPECTATIONS

  • Must attend training related to their positions at the beginning of each school year and throughout each semester as required
  • Must follow all policies and procedures set forth by the library
  • Must perform key Student Assistant duties to include providing outstanding customer service to all library patrons, assisting with opening and closing duties, answering and directing questions both in person and over the phone, and assisting with the library’s inventory.
  • Are expected to report on time for scheduled hours and maintain regular attendance to work
  • Work in a team environment to ensure all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Will assist with other tasks and special projects as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITLES

Student Assistants must have good communication and organizational skills, a strong sense of customer service, the ability to work in a team setting, be computer literate, self-motivated, able to multi-task, and have a strong attention to detail. Student Assistants must also be able to lift 10-25 pounds.
