Close to Campus
While your graduate education will be rigorous, you’ll find the local scene can help you pursue a healthy work-life balance. The Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and at a crossroads of culture and beautiful natural scenery. Our hilltop campus is designed with a healthy lifestyle in mind — with walking trails, access to fitness facilities, and amazing mountain views. Murphy Deming is just a short drive from Staunton — named among Smithsonian magazine’s “20 Best Small Towns in America,” brimming simultaneously with historical architecture, cultural attractions, eclectic shops, and foodie-friendly dining. Nearby Waynesboro is home to the Shenandoah Valley Art Center. Travel a bit farther east on I-64, to discover an abundance of music, fine arts, theatre, and historic offerings in Charlottesville.
The local area is a hub for regional health and rehabilitation facilities. The Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center, Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, Western State Hospital, and Augusta Health are among some of the many excellent providers of health care services in this area. These facilities offer exceptional opportunities to the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences for clinical/educational partnerships and research.
Where to Live
The surrounding area offers a number of housing opportunities for our graduate students. Incoming students will be provided additional information about housing options and resources to find roommates.
Opportunities abound for camping, backpacking, hiking (with trails ranging from easy to challenging), whitewater kayaking, biking (both on- and off-road), skiing, snowboarding, and horseback riding. It’s also a perfect setting for studying birds, wildflowers, stream biology, and ecology. Mary Baldwin is:
