Take US 250 west for about 19 miles from campus. You will go through west Augusta. Watch for the National Forest Recreation Area sign on the right side of the road. The picnic area beside the road is called Mountain House, the wilderness area is at the end of the gravel road that passes the Mtn. House parking lot.

The wilderness area is over 6,000 acres in size. The forest contains many stands of timber that were not cut in the logging boom of the last century. As several major floods have removed most of the road bed that once followed the draft, finding the seven fords that once crossed it is now a challenge.

The best maps of the trail system can be obtained from the Deerfield district office of the GWNF on route 254 just west of Staunton.
