From November 9 to December 4, 2015, the exhibition “in + from: A Painting Project by Duncan Martin” will be on view at Mary Baldwin University’s Hunt Gallery. Martin is a painter living and working in Colorado and Illinois. For the past five years, he has been working on an ambitious artistic project “58 in 58,” painting in all 58 national parks in 58 months. To date, he has painted in 48 of the now 59 national parks. Martin has taken a year’s sabbatical for the 2015–16 academic year to complete the project, as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in August 2016. The work in the Hunt Gallery exhibition will feature a range of paintings, some being small studies done on location and others larger scale works completed in Martin’s studio. Martin studied painting with Neil Welliver at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving an MFA in 1986. From 1987 to 1995, he taught art at Principia College in Elsah, Ill. In 1995, he left teaching to focus on painting and lived in Northern New Mexico, Southern Arizona, and Southwestern Colorado. Along the way Martin directed painting workshops and taught at Cochise College, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Pima Community College, Tucson, Ariz. In 2010, he returned to Principia College as a Professor of Art where he teaches painting, drawing, and the senior seminar, and where he is chair of the Department of Art & Art History.
Martin’s paintings have been exhibited at Davis Dominguez Gallery, Tucson, Ariz.; Susan Street Fine Art, Solana Beach, Calif.; Nielsen Gallery, Boston; Watson Gallery, Stonington, Maine; The Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, Ariz.; and the New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford, Mass. His work is represented by Davis Dominguez Gallery in Tucson, Ariz., and his paintings are in numerous public, corporate, and private collections.
A reception will be held for the artist 4:30–6 p.m. on November 9 in Hunt Gallery. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists.
