The Sunday Recital Series at Mary Baldwin University will continue on Sunday, February 11.

Pianist Lynne Mackey will perform works of Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, and Medtner.  The recital is at 3 p.m. in Francis Auditorium.

Mackey’s appealing program features a wide range of pieces, including Beethoven’s well-known “Waldstein” Sonata, op. 53, along with two etudes by Franz Liszt, and Chopin’s beautiful Fourth Ballade.  She will also treat the audience to some works which may be less familiar, such as three Fairy Tales Nicholai Medtner andChaconne, a work by American composer Robert Evett.

“I think the audience will enjoy the contrast in this program,” explains Mackey.  “In the first half, the short Fairy Tales by Medtner, a Russian composer, will contrast with Beethoven’s famous “Waldstein” Sonata.  The pieces on the second half are shorter, but still show a strong contrast: the Chaconne of Robert Evett was written in 1950, but is an old form, while the familiar Chopin Ballade is firmly planted in the Romantic period.”

Mackey has performed solo recitals and chamber music in the United States, Brazil, Europe and Morocco. Highlights of her career include performances at Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Hall in New York City, the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, and the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Rotterdam. She is director of the Virginia Baroque Performance Academy, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, as part of the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival.  She is also a member of the Gee-Mackey Duo (cello and piano). Mackey has taught at Eastern Mennonite University and Bluefield College, and she currently teaches at Mary Baldwin University.

Mary Baldwin’s Sunday Recital Series will conclude on March 18 with a performance by clarinetist Lynda Dembowski and pianist Lise Keiter. Audiences will also not want to miss the Carl Broman Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26 featuring the extraordinary young Korean pianist Dasol Kim.

Single tickets for February 11 may be purchased at the door and are $5 for the general public and $4 for students and seniors (free for MBU students). For more information, please visit http://www.marybaldwin.edu/arts/music/ or call 540-887-7294.
