Part of planning committee for the first annual retreat for the VA Association of Math Teacher Educators, which was held at MBU in September. The focus for the retreat was: Who are we and what do we want to be known for in the Virginia mathematics teacher education community? Attendees came from five different universities.

Presented “Developing a Research Agenda of Mathematics Teacher Leaders and their Preparation and Professional Development Experiences” with a team that included professors from four other universities.

Presented research paper at the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) in Grand Rapids, Mich.: “Nonprofit Leadership Style Preferences of South Korean Employees and American Employees: A Comparative Study.”

Co-presented research paper at the National Communication Association conference, Dallas, Texas, with C. W. Woo and J. Gochenour: “Social Capital Building Process of a Korean Immigrant Church in the U.S.”

Kerry Cooke, assistant professor of theatre and Shakespeare and Performance

Invited talk at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon about letter writing in Shakespeare’s plays. The event was part of a new initiative in the UK called “Being Human.” Funded by the government, it is designed to celebrate and support the Humanities and the Liberal Arts.

Presented a paper at the Blackfriars Conference: “The Other Winding Sheet: Deathbed Letters in Shakespeare’s Plays.”

Gave an invited post-show talk on the play “Equus” at James Madison University.

Matthew Davies, associate professor of Shakespeare and Performance

Played Richard Burbage in Virginia Repertory Theatre’s staging of “Shakespeare in Love.”

Cast as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Paul Menzer’s new play, “Robin Hood is Dead,” which played at Oak Grove the weekend leading into the Blackfriars Conference.

Delivered paper, “Voicing the Inside-Outsider: Performing Shakespeare’s ESL Characters.”

Gave a guest lecture at La Salle University in Philadelphia: “‘My native English now I must forego’: Reflections on an Original Pronunciation Production of Richard II for the Prague Shakespeare Company.”

Doris Dodson, social work field director

With MBU Director of the Vantage Point Nell Desmond, awarded a digital humanities micro-grant through the VFIC Foundation to educate and promote the importance of the ‘whole’ student through self-care and resilience.

Allison Ellington, occupational therapy program director

Co-authored a paper titled “Virtual Activities of Daily Living for Recovery of Upper Extremity Motor Function” published in the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering journal.

Emily Ely, assistant professor of education

A manuscript, Classroom Simulation to Prepare Teachers to Use Evidence-Based Comprehension Practices, was accepted for publication with the Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education. MBU assistant professor of education Stephanie Sebolt was also a contributing author.

A paper, “Reading Books and Reading Minds: Differential effects of Wonder and The Crossover of empathy and theory of mind” published in Study & Scrutiny: Research in Young Adult Literature.

Presented paper “Music and Citizenship: Making Comunidad Through Son Jarocho” at the Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference held at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington.

Presented “Charro Days and Fandango Fronterizo: (Un) Crossing Physical and Symbolic Borders” at the 32nd Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities held at the University of West Georgia.

Colleen Pendry, adjunct professor of art

Recent work in steel and fiber was featured in a group exhibition at the Circle Gallery in Annapolis, Md., and also featured at the Augusta Regional Library through Dec. 2017.

In cooperation with MBU artist-in-residence Claudia Bernardi, worked in a community mural project with the Center of Global Engagement at James Madison University titled “Encventro de coloes, flores y corazones” (Encounter of Colors, Flowers, and Hearts).

Presented a poster with MDCHS graduate, Jose Gil-Figueroa ’17 at the Virginia Physical Therapy Association annual meeting in Newport News, Va. The poster was entitled “Physical Therapist’s Perspectives on Usage and Effectiveness of Interpretation Services During Encounters with Patients with Limited English Proficiency.”

Presented a poster with two class of 2018 PT students, Maeve Talbot and Miranda Young, at the 2017 International Association for Dance Medicine and Science Meeting in Houston, Texas. The poster was entitled “Correlation Between Roles Performed & Injuries Sustained During The Nutcracker in Professional Ballet Companies.”

Played the role of Chris in Oak Grove’s production of “Calendar Girls.”
