Cliffs

As I child, I judiciously

flung myself off cliffs

inside my yard.

I floated towards the tincture grass

between the burning barns,

dark along the ridgeline

that wouldn’t breath.

I lived in the air

dodging the old wind vane

for years,

wanting no compass

but pelican wings

Johanna is a Senior at the University of Idaho, majoring in English-Creative Writing. She planned on majoring in business, but after begrudgingly taking a poetry course for the humanities credits, She fell in love. She fell in love with words, with poems, with the wonderful students and staff of the English department.
Johanna is from the Pacific Northwest. Born on the Oregon coast, she moved out to the Northeaster part of the state at three. She grew up around Mountains and Cowboys, who worked long days, smoked harsh cigarettes, and told tall tales. Her fascination with story began with these rough and rugged men and women.
A late arrival to the academic scene, She started her freshman year at the age of twenty-eight. Though this could have been a detriment, She believes that the years of work-force, non-academic, experience have supplied her with fodder for her writing. School, however, was the match, and she is so excited to see where she will go from here.
