The Mary Baldwin University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Program provides support for teams of Mary Baldwin faculty and undergraduate students to work collaboratively on projects that involve substantial research, scholarship, or creative activity. A proposed project may be in any discipline or combination of disciplines but must:
- Be part of a long-term, sustainable direction for the faculty collaborator’s research, scholarship, or creative activity, or have the potential to become so;
- involve at least one undergraduate student as a significant collaborator and beneficiary, enhancing her/his potential for developing knowledge and fruitful directions for advanced study or a senior project;
- seek to involve faculty and students in the dissemination of results through publications, conference presentations, or other appropriate means, as well as through outreach activities to other current and prospective students.

The VFIC Mednick Fund annually supports a summer research fellowship for a faculty member from each of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) member institutions. Full-time faculty in both undergraduate and graduate programs are eligible to apply, and projects in all disciplines are eligible for support. The award amount for 2016 is $2,300. Funds may be spent for travel, supplies, or many other research-related expenses, but may not be spent on stipends or wages, capital equipment, or registration fees. Because only one application per institution may be submitted, Mary Baldwin conducts an internal review of applications. The internal submission date for 2016 applications is February 15, 2016.
Mary Baldwin Mednick Guidelines 2016
The Mary Baldwin Faculty Development Fund provides support to attend meetings (MSWord) or conduct projects (MSWord). All full-time faculty are eligible; continuing part-time faculty are considered eligible in principle but in practice full-time faculty take priority and limits on funds seldom allow support to be awarded to part-time faculty requests. Requests are reviewed on an on-going basis by the School Coordinators. Maximum amounts are set by Division Coordinators at the beginning of each year based on the amount of faculty development funds available.
Faculty from Mary Baldwin University have special access to the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle, North Carolina through the duPont Summer Seminars Program. In odd-numbered summers (2013, 2015, etc.) support is provided for two Mary Baldwin faculty to join colleagues from other liberal arts colleges for three-week seminars on a variety of topics. Faculty in all areas of the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences are eligible. The application deadline is generally in mid-February, and information on the year’s topics is distributed through the Vice President/Dean of the College’s office.
