Appreciation of Teague Family Lecture Series on October 21, 2020
By Kara Hankard
I really enjoyed watching this lecture series and I would highly recommend watching it. Here is my favorite quote from the lecture:
Question: What can higher education institutions do to truly educate its students about pertinent history? Do you think MBU should have a mandatory course that all students should take in order to foster and educate important historical events, such as an Intro to Africana course? – Heidi
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill’s Response: “I can’t imagine going to a university of any sort that doesn’t make the teaching of African American History mandatory. I can’t get a college degree and not encounter Shakespeare, I can’t get a college degree and not encounter the American Revolution. I can’t get an American University degree and not encounter math, right? These things are what we think make you a fully educated American … It becomes a self selection issue … you can’t understand America without understanding slavery. You can’t understand the American economy without understanding the cotton economy of the south. You can’t understand the American democratic experiment without understanding Jamestown. You can’t understand America without understanding what it meant to have exploited unpaid African labor. You can’t understand America without understanding the Civil Rights struggle. You can’t even appreciate the present moment without understanding the shoulders and the backs we stand on to arrive here.
