Silene A Greek plant name, may be based on Silenus, the foster father of Bacchus, God of wine. Silenus often had beer foam all over his face, and the plant’s resemblance to a foam covered face caused it to be named after him.

Pink refers not to the color but to the verb to pink which means to cut with a jagged edge.23

Natural history / Folklore

Exudes a sticky sap on the stem which prevents ants from stealing nectar.

Description

May - July Vivid red color of flower, paired narrow leaves. Grows from 6 to 24 inched tall. Open woods and wood borders.
