Lupinus from the Latin lupus for it was believed that the plant “wolfed” the nutrients from the soil1 Since they are legumes they actually fix nitrogen and improve the soil.54

Poisonous especially the seeds.5 Leaves track the sun’s path during the day and fold together at night.22 Even though they are legumes the seeds contain varied amounts of alkaloids and therefore have never been classed as an edible wild food.9

Description

May – June Flowers blue, rarely pinkish or white. Open woods, wood borders, and roadsides.
