Represents a monotypic genus.¹⁵ Two distinct varieties exist australe which spreads by stolons forming dense mats, and virginianum which has a more upright form.¹² As a member of the Asteraceae it is one of the earliest bloomers, the ray flowers are reduced to 5 in number and careful observation is needed to realize it Asteraceae origin.⁵⁹
