Natural history / FolkloreWas in use by the Babylonians in 500 BC as a digestive. In Europe mint flavored alcohol is drunk as a digestive. Schneider 2002. May be the result of Hybridization of spearmint with another mint. The mints tendency to form hybrids results in a wide variation in the strength of the flavor.
