Young unfolding leaves can be eaten as salad.20 In some regions of the Appalachians it was known as mountain lettuce.29 The plant is becoming rare in some states due to collecting for the horticultural trade. It can take six years before the plant is large enough to flower.34

Description

April-June White flower turning pink with age. Three petals, sepals and leaves. Differs from Wake Robin in not having a dark center. Rich woods, coves and on slopes.
