The large lip of the flower has given the plant it's common names of Ladies Slipper or Moccasin Flower. The latin name refers to Aphrodite's slipper pedilum.33

Description

The Ladies Slippers differ from other Orchids in the number of stamens that bear pollen. The two pollen bearing stamens are on either side of the opening of the slipper. The third stamen bears no pollen and forms a shieldlike object in the center of the flower.33
