Natural history / Folklore

The most widespread of the violets, heart shaped leaves and hairs from the lateral petals. The grayish white form with the blue veins pictured at the right is the Confederate Violet.⁴⁹

With the new taxonomy all of the stemless blue violets may be the same polymorphic species; more work to be done on this one.⁴⁹

Description

Both lateral petals are bearded, the terminal petal is longer and does not have a beard. Plants range in size from 4 to 9 inches. Found in moist woods and meadows. Can come up in lawns as a weed.
