To Burn Bridges

It takes two sides to build a bridge

But only one side to see it fall.

And when the stones rot with time,

And the earth swallows it whole,

Only the remnants of a life once lived

Will be memorialized.

It takes two sides to build a bridge

But only one person to cross it.

To take the first step on the cobblestone,

To trek to the other end.

But it’s impossible to cross a bridge

That has already succumbed.

It takes one person to destroy the bridge,

To give way to nature, demanding earth.

To let the vines reach out and clutch each stone

And the dirt to swallow it whole.

It takes two sides to build a bridge.

But one to see it burn.
