Ode to My Innocence

This is an ode to my innocence.

To the little girl who dreamed

in the forest by the swing set,

while ogres and evil queens stomped

in the little, yellow house beyond.

While fairies fluttered about

and mermaids splashed in chlorine.

White fluff wrote tales of romance,

dresses swirling in a waltz

that painted the sky a forget-me-not blue.

                                                      Adorning flowers

grew and changed

through the thrall of candle smoke.

Petals still hang from fingers and toes,

cling to her thin, ivory neck.

To the little girl who dreamed,

how do I tell her

that those dreams were never meant to be?

And somewhere out there,

is there a woman wondering what to tell me?
