Under

The gulls mutter to each other

as they spiral overhead.

I can’t make out their words above the

swish of water off of softened skin,

yet, those wretched birds might only be

dried salt that lingers on eyelashes.

The tide laps spitefully at my peeling cheeks

as these pruny limbs go limp.

and foam leeches into my ears hushing

those incessant spectator’s squawks.

The crown of my head is shocked

by a tender cold caress.

I am laden with thirst and dead-

tired white wings of no use to my frame.

So I’ll part my bloodied lips

and swallow.
