Love Lies

We wear a mask that tries to hide

the butterflies in our stomach and

the light pink on our faces.

The feeling of their touch on your cheek

to wipe away a tear, or their voice that sooths in

all situations or even their pine tree sent that

makes your eyes water every time and fills

a room as they enter. When it’s all gone, its hidden.

But maybe this love isn’t a mask that allows

you to be hidden but instead vulnerable.

Like a cat losing all its hair and then being

put onto display for the rest of its life being called

“The cat that once had hair” everyone stops and stares.

Now all that’s left is crying in public and ice cream.

Because love and heartbreak are not a mask and now

we sit thinking about all the lies told to everyone.

Love is like a clear mask.
