In 1996, the Elizabeth K. Doenges Visiting Artist/Scholar Lecture Series was established in memory of the late Mary Baldwin alumna and trustee Elizabeth “Liddy” Kirkpatrick Doenges ’63. Each year, the program fulfills Liddy’s vision to bring distinguished artists and scholars to campus for an extended visit, which typically includes a fall public lecture and leading a course during May Term. The lecture series was made possible by the generous contributions of Liddy’s friends, family, and classmates.

This year’s Elizabeth K. Doenges Visiting Artist/Scholar is contemporary artist Diana Cooper. lives in Brooklyn, New York, and teaches drawing and mixed media at Columbia University. She is best known for her hybrid works combining drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and installation. Represented by Postmasters Gallery in New York City, Cooper has exhibited extensively both in the United States and abroad and is the recipient of the Rome Prize, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Pollock-Krasner Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Joan Mitchel Foundation Grant and Anonymous Was A Woman. The main non-governmental organization representative of the International Peace Research Association to the United Nations, Welty has extensive experience working in cross-cultural and politically unstable contexts including Israel/Palestine, Myanmar/Burma, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland, Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan.

Angie Cruz
Author
A faculty member in the creative writing program at the University of Pittsburgh, Cruz has published two novels, Soledad (for which she has also written a screenplay) and Let It Rain Coffee. Her work tends to focus on the experience of Latina Americans, particularly Dominican Americans; and she has been a contributor to numerous journals, anthologies, and conferences devoted to the topics of ethnic identity and Latina American literature.
