Job Duties: Perform reading or mathematics tutoring in either a group or one-on-one setting at Bessie Weller Elementary School.
Expectations:
- Background check
- Have their own reliable transportation to and from the school
- Report on a regular basis and on time for scheduled work time
- Be conscientious, responsible, and mature in their performance
- Follow the teacher guidelines/directions for working with the student(s)
- Regularly report progress made and/or any concerns to the classroom teacher
- Be flexible and willing to work with multiple students or new students as needed
- Be willing to take on different responsibilities throughout the year as they arise
- Be willing and able to prepare materials in advance, if needed
Qualifications:
- Must be Federal Work Study eligible and have a FAFSA on file
- Must have completed at least 30 semester hours at Mary Baldwin
- Professional in appearance and behavior
- Positive attitude
- Successfully follow directions but also think creatively when need be
- Effective people skills
- Basic computer skills and comfortable with the possibility of tutoring online
- Flexible, dedicated, responsible and conscientious
- Completion of Math 156 and ED 323 preferred but not required
Skills you will develop:
- How to effectively communicate with children (preschool and elementary school age) and educators
- How to work with (and tutor) a struggling learner in the subjects of English and/or Math
- Experience using a variety of strategies to help a student learn
- Empathy, understanding, and insight into the reality of struggling learners
Hours: Flexible, as determined by the site school and student
