Position: Archives Student Assistant

Supervisor: Instructional and E-Resources Librarian

Office: Martha S. Grafton Library

 SUMMARY
The student in this position will reorganize, enhance, disseminate, and preserve archival collections. Working with the supervisor, the Archives Student Assistant will improve access to archival collections through both the creation of finding aids and digital collections. The Assistant will learn and apply the skills, theories and tools which inform 21st century archival theory. These may include, but are not limited to, digitization and archival best practices, information literacy, website/online exhibit design, metadata standards, and Digital Humanities tools. All applicants must be federally work study eligible.

HOURS
Archives Student Assistants are expected to work approximately 6–9 hours a week. After training is complete and projects are determined, the schedule will be flexible with supervisor’s approval.  Hours are in accordance with contracts determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

RESPONSIBILITIES / EXPECTATIONS

  • Report on time for scheduled work hours
  • Follow policies and procedures set forth by the library
  • Audit and maintain order of the archives collections
  • Create records (finding aids) for archival collections
  • Complete tasks in a timely fashion
  • Assist librarian with special projects as assigned

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Good oral and written communication and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and Adobe software
  • Ability to work independently
  • Interest in history or public history encouraged
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to lift 10-15 pounds
