Job Duties: Perform shelving of all types of library materials correctly and quickly in alphabetical or numerical order. Provides basic customer service to patrons. May include additional hands-on experience in various library departments for a holistic look at public library services.

Expectations:

  • Report on time for scheduled work shifts
  • Communicate with work study and library supervisors about shifts and hours
  • Sort and shelve library materials according to Dewey Decimal System and other classification schemes
  • Check shelves for correct arrangement of materials (shelf reading)
  • Straighten shelved items and display materials
  • Clear tables or books and magazines; help maintain neat appearance of work and public areas
  • Assist patrons with agreed-upon limits
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Physical Requirements: Bending, standing, stretching, squatting, and kneeling for up to 3 hours per day. Lifting (up to 30lbs.), carrying (up to 20lbs.), and pushing heavy carts and bins of books. Must be able to climb on and balance on a kick stool. Requires visual discrimination and the ability to read spine labels. The employee is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the English alphabet
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, (will need to pass training)
  • Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions and take direction from supervisors
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with library staff and the public
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks
  • Professional in appearance and behavior
  • Flexible, dedicated, and conscientious
  • Willingness to ask for help or clarification
  • Positive attitude towards public service work
  • Self-motivated; able to work alone and without direct supervision

Skills you will develop: Page will develop a familiarity with the public library and its practices. Page will hone their organizational, professional, and customer service skills. Page will develop independent and efficient work ethic skills.

Hours: 2 hour shifts 2-3 times per week, or as determined by the student and library supervisor; ideal hours between 12 and 3, but shift times are flexible.
