Are you considering a career move into education but you are not interested in working in the classroom? Have you also decided that you want to work with Adult Learners, not in a K-12 setting? This is an interesting career move- one that can take you anywhere in the world to different institutions of higher education or corporate training rooms to help educate the workforce.

Seeking an MEd in Higher Education at Mary Baldwin University will help prepare you for taking on those new career opportunities. Our program in the College of Education (COE) has a common theme throughout the curriculum: Social Justice, Diversity and Inclusivity. Students will draw on the foundations for understanding the multiple bodies of research that underpin student identity development, learning modules and best practices for engaging today’s adult learners. Our graduate students are planning careers in many different fields. Some of those fields include working in student affairs, athletics, civic and global service learning, professional academic advising, institutional student success initiatives, research, and external consulting and training opportunities.

As a lifetime educator, working at all levels of formal education, I can’t imagine a better career choice. Higher Education has been the focus of most of my career. Watching students engage in arduous efforts associated with work, family and school, and ultimately reaching their goals is extremely rewarding.  Daily, I have the pleasure of working with many individuals who do not work with students in the classroom but are critical to the experiential learning that makes a liberal arts environment such a rich place.

All units of a higher education institution (including the admissions staff to those in institutional research and financial aid) must serve each student. Finding one’s niche in the tapestry of higher education is not only rewarding but ensures that you will impact today’s students. And by the way, each term we have a one credit course that will help you consider what career options may be in your future: ED 656: Introduction to Higher Education Professions. And the course is FREE!
